MVP Question: Delta codeshare

Posted by anonym on January 6th, 2009
  • Hello all, I have a question about MVP qualification. This is going to influence whether I pay a bit more to fly to Portugal on Delta instead of Continental.

It is quite clear that miles from Delta flights are used for MVP qualification (albeit at the 25,000 mile qualification level). What if a flight is operated by Air France but is a Delta codeshare, bought through Delta.com, with a Delta flight number? Do the miles on the Air France flight count toward MVP qualification?

A 14,000 mile round trip will put me very close to MVP qualification and I don't mind paying a bit more to achieve this.

    Thanks!

  • oh they know
i dont know the technical ins and outs, but they know
i think it has something to do with your ticket has the codeshare designation but when you fly you have the operating carrier flight number

NW is the best with this -- also know what class you paid for and what class you flew in -- if you get a bump to F and someone doesnt code it right you still only get the miles for the class of service you purchased

  • One more question...this may make the above moot. If I see this on Delta's website...

Departs Arrives Flight # Cabin & Class
    SEA 8:00am 23 May 2006 JFK 4:25pm 23 May 2006 Delta 1296 0 stops Coach (U)

    JFK 8:40pm 23 May 2006 CDG 9:55am 24 May 2006 Delta 8557* 0 stops Coach (T)

...does that mean that the JFK - CDG flight, the second one, is fare class T, and so would qualify for MVP miles as an AF flight?

the trick is figuring out the what fare bucket AF considers DL's T class
for example, A class on AS is Z class on AA (first class saver award)
fare buckets do not translate from airline to airline

  • AF does get MVP miles, but only if tickets are in cetain booking classes. There's more info on the website.

Okay, here is what I found. On http://www.alaskaair.com/mileageplan/MileagePartners_Airline.asp it says:

    Earn Miles On:
    Air France flights

    Mileage Earned:
One mile for each mile flown*; 25% bonus for purchased Business Class; 50% for purchased First Class.

*Mileage is not earned for tickets flown in G, L, N, and U classes of service.

MVP or MVP Gold qualifying flight miles: Yes

Does the "no miles in these classes" apply to MVP qualifying as well?

    Earn Miles On:
Delta, Delta Connection, Delta Shuttle, and Song operated flights

    Mileage Earned:
500 miles, or actual flight miles, whichever is greater
25% bonus for purchased Business Class; 50% bonus for purchased First Class

MVP or MVP Gold qualifying flight miles: Yes

Is the word "operated" the key here? Since it is not Delta metal, even though it is a Delta flight number, mileage credit will go by the Air France rules above? So if the AF flights are in G, L, N or U class I won't get mileage or MVP qualifications for them? If anybody could confirm that would be great. Thanks.

  • I'm taking Delta ANC-Shannon, Ireland this summer for that exact reason. Continental through EWR and Air Canada through YYZ were both slightly cheaper ($50-60), but the 13,000 MVP qualifying miles were too good to pass up.

Routing is ANC-SEA-JFK-SNN on the way over and SNN-ATL-ANC coming back.

  • Usually "the metal matters." I.e. which airline is actually operating the flight.

AF does get MVP miles, but only if tickets are in cetain booking classes. There's more info on the website.

I wonder. How would Alaska's computer know it was an Air France flght and not a Delta flight? I would think the "DL" flight designator of the marketing airline is what the program is coded to read. No?
