OT: Where to watch NHL playoffs in London, England

Posted by jack on January 6th, 2009
  • Hi all:
A student I work with is going to London June 4 and was complaining today that he would not be able to watch the playoffs (assuming they are still going then). There must be an all-Canadian pub somewhere in London that would show the games: any suggestions? The only glitch I can think of is the time difference.

    Many thanks, as always,
    H

  • I agree. The Maple Leaf is probably the only place in LON. Covent Gardens is a nice area anyway, so it's a small annoyance to have to go there...

That is your answer. I believe there is (or was) one in the Covent Garden area. Go to www.thisislondon.co.uk and search the entertainment/dining section.

  • Unfortunately, they use the US feed (ABC/ESPN), which has interns calling the game for them. (1% of 88 million households in the US watched Game 1...)

Just found out that the games are being shown live on 'five' - one of the national UK terrestrial TV channels.

  • I lived in London from 88-94 and went to the Maple Leaf a fair bit. One of my most enduring memories of watching hockey there was when almost the entire pub burst into O Canada at the start of one of the 1991 Canada Cup games.

A word of warning, though, based on my experiences there in the early 90s. The games start so late British time (usually 1 am) that the pub will likely be closed. In the 90s, the closing time for pubs (as opposed to clubs) was 11 pm. Thus, the games tended to be shown the next night on a tape delayed basis. So, if you wanted to watch the game you had to avoid hearing the score from another source....not much of a problem then given that the Internet was still just an academic endeavour....a bit tougher now!

The other thing I remember about the Maple Leaf is that they used to put up the sports pages of the Globe above the urinals. It made for some long pee breaks.....

  • The Sports Cafe in Haymarket (near Piccadilly Circus) may have it on if there is nothing else of interest to European sports fans..... some friends of mine have gone there and have watched some NHL games in the past but it can be hit or miss......... the Maple Leaf in Covent Garden may be a better choice. But if there's any football, cricket, or rugby match on -- good luck!!

  • Thanks, everyone. I knew I could count on all of you to come up with the answer. I'll pass this along to our student who will be in full Flames regalia, I'm sure. Merci mille fois.

  • CAFC nailed it. The Maple Leaf may be the only place to catch NHL playoffs while in London. Mainly Canucks, ex-pats etc - usually a fun night. Hampton, I hope you'll wear your Flames jersey that you have secretly tucked away...

    Have a good time,

    Cheers,
