  • Empress is correct. There are still of seats available. Maybe not all destinations are available in 'W' class, but Avenue has certainly opened up a lot more space. Possibly your former colleague has not been trained n Avenue yet, because there was lots of availability with Avenue when I looked, not to mention the 'W' class that Empress has noted.

  • I think it is important to remember the *A factor here -- if you are flying outside of Canada, usually one or more *A carrier will have service, and availability can be suprrisingly good. The challenge is to know what and how to ask.
This point was exhibited by our family's ability to obtain three J tickets YOW-LAX three weeks before Christmas, leaving on Dec. 24 and coming back the final Saturday of the Christmas break.
We used United, we routed through IAD outbound (dead as a doornail for business class travel on Christmas eve) and through SNA-ORD on the way back (no one uses business tickets on that route especially on a Saturday afternoon.) I had to spell out the airport code for the Aeroplan agent, who was indeed surprised that yes, three J seats would be available on that route at that time.
The US airways addition may open up many options for Caribbean and US routes this fall/winter.
Frankly, I can think of very few times when I have not been able to obtain convenient, practical award travel -- and when these have happened (like today's flight YOW-YYZ-BWI)-- the double points for KK access really works quite well.

You might want to ask your collagues how valid that info is given that booked solid = seats still available as per above. Oh btw, new avenue awards going really well.

I just randomly picked YOW-YVR-YOW July 15/19. There are only J rewards available (to me, a basic AP member) but I could go if I wanted to. Granted I would have to fly YOW-YYZ-YEG-YVR, but I could still get there using my points. I think your information is flawed.

A week and a half ago I booked a J reward YOW-YVR-YOW June 9/10. I had no problem finding seats. In fact, I had anticipated not being able to get a J award.

I had reason to call AP with queries regarding my flights (after I had booked them). To my delight I (as I said above, I'm just a basic AP member) had to wait no more than 2-3 minutes each time. I have not flown AC since 1998 and not used an AP reward since 1989. I found today's AP staff to be much friendlier and nicer than those of days gone by.

  • More importantly for most of us is whether one can get a return trip within a reasonable number of days outbound and back. Sure seats may be available on scattered flights, but how about the returns? A check of flights to SYD this month show some open D availability for SEs mid-month, but very little return a bit later in the month.

I personally find this offensive. People make travel decisions knowing that they earn miles and are entitled to have a resonable expectation of being able to use their miles - this is not a game of roulette. As far as AP being "just a reward program", it is sad and disheartening that this is what it is being seen as - it ought to be the central focus of maintaining brand loyalty. If the above comments are reflective of how AP/AC view things then I am glad I am not accumulating any more flight/credit card miles into AP. Having said this, I do not expect to be able to book a reward to Paris on a Friday in July at this stage, but having all of the trunk routes booked for the whole summer is not reasonable.

  • We US Airways members will start grabbing up the rest of the 'scattered' AC reward inventory tomorrow. :D

  • PLEASE NOTE...THESE POINTS WERE GIVEN TO YOU FOR MERCHANDISE OR FLIGHTS YOU ALREADY PURCHASED..FLEW. YOU BOUGHT A TV..THAT TV IS AT HOME WITH YOUR EXTRA POINTS YOU GOT WITH CIBC...Those are not 'extra points'. If you look at airfares, the cost of points were factored in and they are given to customers in return for their loyalty. If people can't redeem them for any travels, then no one will collect Aeroplan miles and no companies out there will be willing to partner up with Aeroplan because there's no value to the miles...

With the new Avenue awards, people now have the option of getting a seat close to departure date if they're willing to pay a bit extra.

Btw, can you not type in all capital? This is not a PNR. It's just very hard to read. Thanks.

  • I saw a billboard for TD Gold Visa today near Safeway that says something like: "Contrary to popular belief, travel points can be redeemed."

  • It does say regular aeroplan availability. Does that include Avenue Awards?
    :) I think NOT....
Avenue awards is just a way of increasing award level costs. AP is already uncompetitive and this makes it worse... but what can we do with a monopoly.... but end it... Thank God for West Jet.

  • I think we all understand that award availability is restricted in some fashion or another by all the award programs. However, these are not some "maybe you can use them, maybe you can't bonus". These points/miles/whatever are marketing incentives used to sell a product. As such, they must be redeemable on a reasonable basis. Otherwise, the use of the incentive could be considered as "deceptive" marketing and be in breach of federal and provincial trade-practice acts.
