CO: ANC-LGA $378 (a/i)

Posted by anonym on January 6th, 2009
  • Available in August and September. This run nets at least 9,340 miles with routing ANC-IAH-LGA-IAH-ANC. More experienced folks could probably figure out how to milk it further.

Delta and NWA are matching the fare.

  • Is this still alive? The lowest I see from NYC is $630. I've not done much research as I am traveling :D

  • CO just cleared all my outbound flights 5 days before my departure. ^^^ Now, I am set to go and see the nature of Alaska in 15 hours give and take based on the advice of the FTs. ;) Any trip report yet for those who had flown this deal?

  • It's going to be an interesting haul for me. Over 27 hours flight time and about 36+ hours total travel time but it's all doable over a single weekend.

  • Drive down to Seward (~3-4 hours) and see the fjords. There's another small (Girdwood, I think) just south of Anchorage that is also pretty nice. Denali National Park is only 4 hours up the road as yet another option. You should be able to drive to Seward, hike the Exit Glacier and drive back in a (long) day. Not sure how many hors of sunlight there will be in October, so that will affect things.

I wouldn't recommend trying to do Denali in one day, plus it'll be pretty much shut down by October anyway. That said, the drive to the Park is impressive in places. The drive to Seward is scenic and doable in a day. Portage Glacier is about an hour from Anchorage and used to be pretty spectacular (although the last time I was there it had melted substantially--much less impressive than when I visited as a kid). It's near Girdwood, which would be a nice area to walk around (no skiing quite yet, unfortunately :)). You'll have moderate daylight at that point, with the sun setting around 7pm and light for another hour or so.

  • I'm just checking some random dates:
Sat 10/7-8 LGA/JFK-ANC (but not EWR)
    Sat 10/13-14 LGA/JFK-ANC
    Sat 10/20-21 LGA/JFK-ANC
    Wed 11/7-8 LGA-ANC

So it'll eat up the weekend but you can sleep in your own bed on Sunday and be ready for work on Monday.

  • Why would you go through SEA? certainly not for the miles?? better aircraft/timings? considering doing one of these myself

I may be wrong, but I don't believe the IAH-ANC nonstop runs in the winter, thus requiring a stop in SEA before continuing on to ANC at that time of year.

  • For those who are looking for a bit of comfort on the flight, it looks like CO.com is pricing the mileage upgrade as only 15K miles instead of 30K if you do the same night turn. My colleague just booked his (minus the IAH-JFK segments).

CO.com also lists it as JFK-JFK on the My Itineraries page.

  • This is to report that my trip went well which concluded this year's flying with Continental after reaching the PE re-qualification for next year. I was upgraded 7/8, including my flights from FLL-EWR, and even extended complimentary upgraded from ANC-SEA to a pax that I was having a conversation with while waiting for our flight at the gate. Sometimes, I do this if first is not full. However, one elite pax complained to the FA when his companion was not upgraded even if there were at least 6 seats left in first. Somehow, the GAs in ANC were not clearing pax for upgrades at the gate not unless you go and check with them personally. When I asked for a complimentary, the GA told me that this had to be done during check-in, but she did it anyway. In the past, I'd done complimentary upgrades at the gates without any complaints/comments from the agents at all. In fact, the GAs in ANC were not busy knowing that there were only two inbound and outbound flights from their airport. Maybe they were just bored or something else.

Alaska is a beautiful place but not too cold for this floridian :)
Overall, I am glad I got the deal and had the opportunity to see part of Alaska for the first time. Even if it was cloudy and cold for a Floridian like me, I still enjoyed the scenery of the place. Most mountain tops are already capped with snow. The drive to Seward was nice and I made several stops. I did not have the chance to do any of the boat trips for I arrived late in time for the boat to sail. Seward is a nice small fishing and boat trips community. On my way back, I stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which I am not really impressed. In fact, I am confused by its name for it turns out to be a mini-zoo. Perhaps, I could have seen better animals at the Anchorage zoo. Anyway, with plenty of time, I managed to get back to Anchorage just in time for dinner before heading to the airport to return the car and to check-in for my outbound flight.

I am looking forward to coming back to Alaska again, perhaps when it is summer time. :) :)

    David

Oddly the same thing happened when I tried to upgrade at the Gate for the US flight back to Vegas...I didn't score...the Delta agents upgraded revenue passengers who were non-elite oh well ;)

  • I've always been upgraded as Plat IAH ANC. Only 737-800 and 757-300 no 200's on the route.

  • There are two low fares out there. One is a base fare of $321, and here are its rules:

  • Has anybody got this to work on NWA?

  • FYI, folks........

CO is offering SEA-ANC at $203 roundtrip, all-in, for most of November. To give you some perspective...$203 is normally the cost of a one way SEA-ANC, not roundtrip. This is essentially a two-for-one deal. 1448 EQM's in each direction.

    I haven't seen a $200 SEA-ANC roundtrip for at least a couple years now.

  • I am thinking about doing this in January to get a jump start on EQMs for 2008. Has anyone been to Alaska in January? I know it is probably dark and pretty cold, but is it worth spending a day there? I have never been to Alaska before (have always wanted to go for a few days in the summer).

Also, does anyone have any input on upgrade chances for a Gold on a weekend in January?

  • CO 667 is the through-flight stopping in Seattle for about an hour while CO 1739/1681 is the connecting flight through Seattle requiring a plane change. The connecting flight arrives almost 4 hours ahead of the through flight though which I'm hoping is the right choice to make. The ANC-IAH return is listed as leaving 50 minutes after the through-flight arrives.

Although now I'm wondering, is this the same plane making the turn-around? Perhaps it would be better to take the through-flight, that way if I'm delayed at any point IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA I'll at least be delayed with the plane I have to take.

  • I am thinking about doing this in January to get a jump start on EQMs for 2008. Has anyone been to Alaska in January? I know it is probably dark and pretty cold, but is it worth spending a day there? I have never been to Alaska before (have always wanted to go for a few days in the summer).

I've lived here my whole life- 19 yrs, (except for College- away at Washington State for College in a few days) but speaking from experience, the darkest and coldest days in the ANC area are in Jan/ Feb. These are the months I'd enjoy taking a trip to HNL/OGG/etc... with my family. It would be ok in January, but nothing spectacular occurring. In Feb/MAR, ANC has its Fur Rondy Festival, which is interesting, not sure on dates, and also the Iditarod mushes off from ANC too. So there are things to do, but not exactly sure on dates. Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood is a good place for skiing or boarding. Other than that, Ice Fishing is also enjoyable.

  • Can anyone get this to work from EWR ?

  • I may be wrong, but I don't believe the IAH-ANC nonstop runs in the winter, thus requiring a stop in SEA before continuing on to ANC at that time of year.

Correct. I believe that one of the flights is a through-flight and others are connections.

Can anyone get this to work from EWR ?

Nope. I'm pretty sure the fare is only LGA/JFK. Even though they are co-terms in some of the definitions, CO fares them differently.

  • anyone has any experience on upgrades for the IAH-ANC sector... do they ever fly 757-200s on this route?

  • Which flights did you use and how did you book them?

I ended up cancelling the LGA-ANC run as it would have entailed also getting the DL/US shuttle and did BOS-ANC instead.

    However LGA-ANC was as follows:
    1/8/08
    CO 733 LGA-IAH (~2 hr layover)
    CO 267 IAH-SEA (~ 2 hr layover)
    CO 1681 SEA-ANC (~4 hr layover)
1/9/08 (immediate turnaround, you leave at 12:30am)
    CO 223 ANC-SEA (~3 hr layover)
    CO 166 SEA-IAH (40 min layover)
    CO 1532 IAH-LGA

There's lots of availability in January but I didn't check for any dates in 2007 since I don't need the EQMs and for RDMs this all 737 itinerary isn't exactly awe inspiring.

None of the through-flights priced out and forcing a multi-segment itinerary LGA-IAH and then IAH-ANC broke the fare and kicked it up to an H fare bucket for $1000+

However I figure if there's some truly nasty weather by the time I get to IAH I could potentially try to sweet-talk them into getting me on the through-flight that does the IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA-IAH turnaround. That way there's no chance of misconnecting through those segments and you only have to worry about getting back to LGA (in my case also LGA-BOS).

I'm flying BOS-IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA-IAH-BOS now for marginally more EQMs and slightly less than adding the cost of the US Air shuttle flight BOS-LGA.

  • Although now I'm wondering, is this the same plane making the turn-around? Perhaps it would be better to take the through-flight, that way if I'm delayed at any point IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA I'll at least be delayed with the plane I have to take.

The bird that flies in as 667 is the one that turns around as 223.

I'm doing connecting flights, not the through flights, so I can spend some time in SEA (3hrs going, 2hrs on the return) and actually eat a real meal both directions.

And I have time for Pappadeaux's both ways in IAH. Maybe even a visit to Gordon's Galley, too.

  • So, who else is taking a flight to ANC from NYC?

I finally made all the bookings necessary for this trip complete including a $32/day rental car. My four day weekend perfectly fits to take advantage of this deal. I will be flying from FLL-EWR on the 5th, spend the night in NYC to catch my flight to ANC the next day from LGA. My flight arrives ANC before midnight on 10/6. Plan to get a 5 hour nap before heading out to see the place. After reading all your suggestions, I plan to drive to Seaward and back to ANC later in the afternoon to check the city. Then, return the car before midnight before checking-in for the return flight to LGA then to FLL. I hope all my flights will be upgrade to First (fingers-crossed). :D:D:D

I would not advise driving to Seward for the day unless you plan to take the 6 hour Kenai Fjords boat trip. You would get in on one of the last days if you did it on Oct 6th. Cost is $129 + tax and is WELL worth it. I just did it last month. You will see glaciers and lots of marine wildlife. I saw humpback whales, orcas (killer whales), Dalls porpoises, Stellar sea lions, puffins, several glaciers, one calving (ice falling from it). Just excellent with great commentary as well.

    http://www.kenaifjords.com/543.cfm

You need to leave Anchorage by 7.30am to leave plenty of time to get there for the 11.30am departure. Lasts until 5.30pm and you can drive back. Having been to Seward twice (and going again in two weeks) and Alaska several times, I can tell you that you will not be disappointed. Cold a bit perhaps so dress accordingly in layers. I had glovers with me in July and was glad I did for when I stayed on the outside deck.

If you don't take the boat tour in Seward, I would instead recommend you consider going north of Anchorage to Hatcher Pass area, Eagle River and Palmer. Lots to see out there and much closer. With Seward, it is a long way on a windy two-lane road to just go and "see the place." Another really good idea is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center just south of Anchorage on the way to Seward. Actually if you don't go north and don't do the boat trip in Seward, I would suggest you go to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Girdwood and the Portage Glacier Visitor Center. Check if the Portage Glacier boat ride is running that day. At least all those places are within an easy hour's drive of Anchorage (probably much less that time of year).

My plan from MN is to combine this ticket that allows a stop in MSP in each direction with a second MSP-NYC-MSP ticket so I will end up with three trips - two to NYC (January and June) and one to Alaska in May. The Alaska trip is basically costing me under $150 more than just two MSP-NYC round trips. Looking forward to spending a week in Alaska at that time.

  • I just booked one for January '08 for $413 all-in. For those of you without positioning flights to take for 9,476 EQM that works out to 4.4 cents/eqm but with a 125% platinum bonus it makes it only 1.9cents/rdm.

No in flight power for any of the 737 flights meaning I may finally get to read a book as my laptop won't charge sufficiently in the ANC turn-around time. LGA-IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA-IAH-LGA and 28+ hours of travel time..

No way I'd schlep BOS-EWR to get this started so I guess the DL/US shuttle it is which is going to add some to the cost per mile but I'm not anticipating a lot of travel in '08 so I may as well get started early.

And if you're really interested, the same deal was around in 2005 for about $70 less. See here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=492656).

  • I booked on 10/6-10/8 LGA-ANC-LGA and used my CO MC for a total of $365 all in for 2008 Plat re-qualification. Thanks OP. ^^^

Now, what can I do for 1 day in ANC? All helpful suggestions are welcome.

  • Which flights did you use and how did you book them?

This ($414 a/i in early 2009) still seems to be available from the CO website. I plugged in Feb 8-10 and I was given several choices. I might have to carry a flashlight if I decide to go at that time of year, though... :-)

  • I am thinking about doing this in January to get a jump start on EQMs for 2008. Has anyone been to Alaska in January? I know it is probably dark and pretty cold, but is it worth spending a day there? I have never been to Alaska before (have always wanted to go for a few days in the summer).

beckoa is right, it will certainly be cold and dark. That said, I think a day-long trip in January is just about perfect, if only to experience Alaska in the winter. Having grown up there (Fairbanks) as well, people often ask if it's worth going up in the winter. My response is generally that if you can only go once, definitely, without a doubt go in the summer. However, if you've done a summer trip (or will in the future), spending a short period of time there in the winter (Dec/Jan/Feb) can be an interesting and worthwhile experience. If you really enjoy winter activities and want to get outside, wait until March when there's a reasonable amount of light and temperatures are likely to be better. But a one day January trip, especially when the purpose is just a mileage run, seems like a good idea to me.

  • It seemed there were better 2008 options available yesterday out of LGA (perhaps L bucket sold out). I could have sworn there were flights leaving at decent times of the morning, arriving in ANC around 6pm. Looks like (for the dates I've been checking today) what's left are 5:30am departures out of JFK, arriving into ANC at Midnight, with no availability out of LGA.

  • Just booked LGA-ANC weekend of Sept 29/30 for $404 ai and upgraded all segments for 30K. Thanks for the tip!

Why would you go through SEA? certainly not for the miles?? better aircraft/timings? considering doing one of these myself

  • LGA-ANC is still alive. However the through flight appears to be expressedly excluded from this fare as I can't get it to price out in any combination of multi-segment routings on the Continental website.Which flights did you use and how did you book them?

  • Now, what can I do for 1 day in ANC? All helpful suggestions are welcome.

I would also not recommend Denali for a day trip and it is hard to get in after Sep 13 this year when the shuttle buses stop running.

Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine area are nice day trips not far north of Anchorage. If you can combine Girdwood and Portage Glacier Visitor Center as well as the short boat ride to the Portage Glacier that would be a nice trip. There is also a glacier near here that you can walk on (Matu... something!).

Another option is to drive through the Whittier tunnel (just past Portage Glacier's visitor center) and take a 4 hour boat tour visiting glaciers. Not sure if that is running in October though.

As was mentioned, lots to do in Seward but again, in the off season not sure what is running. Best if operating is the 6 hour Kenai Fjords NP boat tour. Get an early start to Seward, arrive by 11am, 11.30 boat tour finishes at 5.30pm, back in Anchorage that evening. If the AK railroad is still operating its daily schedule, you can take the train round trip for $130 and it is a very scenic trip and works perfectly with the 6 hour boat tour timings. Or Exit Glacier is also a nice possibility, Alaska Sealife Center, and local musem. But Seward is worth more than a day trip. I was there for two nights last month which was too short and going back again in two weeks (but not on this offer)!

    John

  • Just found this... looks tempting! I have no need for the miles in 2007, but might check into this for 2008, when I really need the EQMs since my work schedule is mostly in-state next year. And I've been wanting to get back to Alaska!

  • Has anybody got this to work on NWA?

Got it to work yesterday afternoon on NW. NW is also allowing all three NY Airports.

  • I've lived here my whole life- 19 yrs, (except for College- away at Washington State for College in a few days) but speaking from experience, the darkest and coldest days in the ANC area are in Jan/ Feb. The Iditarod hasn't taken off from ANC for several years due to lack of snow, other than an honorary start.

Seward has the annual Polar Bear Jumpoff each January. You can watch (crazy?) people jump into the icy harbor as a fundraiser. Usually the second or third Saturday in Jan.

Flightseeing may also be an option. If you are lucky, you may be able to see the aurora borealis at night-time. You might also look into a dogsled tour. There is one out of Girdwood.

Planning a road trip is tricky if the roads are bad. Even in October, you can expect snow or ice in the higher elevations, such as the drive to Denali or Seward.

  • too bad, L class, only 50% on NW

even if NW match the fare, it will route through MSP, not a great run for NW.

If only AS had the relationship they have with NW, I'd bite for the CO deal. No EQM's on AS & no UG... no travel...

CO appears to have this deal off and on, it seems when the load for the weekend is lower than "normal". I helped a friend visit for the weekend for 230 AI back in April, and there are periodic "weekend" specials". Now if only AS were to match!!! Come on AS!

  • Also works from JFK. I found a Saturday/Sunday turn on 11/10-11/11 that is basically 36 hours of CO loving. Books in to L fare, FWIW.

I could have pushed the return to route ANC-SEA-IAH-CLE-NYC but chose to not suffer any more for the extra 200 miles.

~$.04/EQM, which isn't great, but since I was expecting to be about 8K short of PLT requalification this seems to let me deal with that and not have to waste any vacation days to do it. I'll have to run my projected travel numbers one more time to make sure I really need this, but it looks like I'm going to do it.

  • LGA-ANC is still alive. However the through flight appears to be expressedly excluded from this fare as I can't get it to price out in any combination of multi-segment routings on the Continental website.

It's actually also "bookable" out of BOS in that it raises the fare by about $156. BOS-IAH-SEA-ANC-SEA-IAH-BOS, all in T class. If you consider that the cheapest DL/US shuttle flights are comparable to this and it obviates the need to transfer carriers at LGA you can sleep a little later and arrive a little earlier back in Boston. I'm having second thoughts about the cost per EQM (5.8c) although with the platinum bonus the rdm cost is 2.6c.

  • That 45 minute layover in ANC might kill me! ;)

Never flown in/out of JFK, so that might be a better deal...

  • Now, what can I do for 1 day in ANC? All helpful suggestions are welcome.

Drive down to Seward (~3-4 hours) and see the fjords.

  • Possible to turn it around? LGA - ... - ANC ??

Yes, and I also found dates working in January of next year (on CO), so it would be useful for 2009 requal.
