Yes they do fly a 744 on the route sometimes.
I have been on it myself on the route returning from LCA and even got Business class seats although flying Economy. (so if you are traveling on one and are booked in Economy, ask if they are using Business class for Economy, and try and reserve yourself a seat)
I guess the reason they use it is simply because it’s available.
Probably an aircraft doing the 001 at 1AM to JFK and since TLV-LCA-TLV is a short hop which takes less then 3 hours including the journey there, the turn around, and the flight back, they use the 744 instead of keeping it on the ground.
It is a strange feeling though traveling on the 744 on a barely 40 minute flight.
By the way I have been on an LY 777 on the route as well, and if fact I think I have been on every type of aircraft they have in the fleet on this route, and I have not been to LCA that often...
Edited to add: Looking at the schedule on the route for the next coming weeks it does indeed seem to list the 744 on the route a hell of a lot, 2-3 times a week (as well as the 777) up until July.
then there are no 744's on schedules on the route (757 only) until Sep when they start again.
Of course with ElAl it can all change in the last minute and I bet that especially on a short route like LCA (must be their shortest) they change the aircraft often in the last minute.
