HNL MR advice for UA please

Posted by jane on January 6th, 2009
  • I live at HNL and have been trying to figure a MR with some difficulty (is HNL a REALLY bad place for MR's???)

First off, I get the feeling that international MR's rarely come out as a bargain, but from HNL are there some bargains to be had since it is in a different part of the world as the rest of the mainland?

You can get orbitz HNL-East coast fares (10,000 miles) for $600. I have been trying some variations off of that mostly playing with LAX-SFO-ORD-PHL-JFK type options, but things always get ugly.

Maybe MR's from HNL are just not feasable, but if anybody can give me some pointers to the contrary I would be much obliged!

  • As tenmoc reported above the HNL/DFW fare is also available on UA.

I always check sale threads, even if my UA isn't mentioned in the title. Sometimes there will be a post that adds the fact that UA now has the fare and I would have missed that bit of information if I discounted the post just because the title said AA.

There isn't a way for us to change thread titles to add that information. Moderators are the only ones with the power.

  • I have seen the occasional excellent MR possibility from HNL on a variety of carriers. AA has one now. NW had one a couple weeks ago. UA had a $67 base fare to ATL a few months ago...although this was a mistake fare and was only available for about 8 hours.

The key to a good MR for me is not deciding, "Now I am going to plan a MR." That only works if you want an OK MR. But excellent MRs are not something you can decide "I am going to book now." Rather they are fares oppurtunities that occasionally come up and the person who is constantly watching can grab these. Obviosuly this takes a lot of time and cannot be done by everyone. But HNL has as many possibilities as anywhere else...if not more, when they come along.
This advice is spot on. For example, right now you can book Paris for $374 from HNL on NW. That is a very nice run for the NW crowd (although it does have a minimum stay, so they would have to hang around Paris a while). You can't force it, but have to stay alert. Log into Travelocity Dream Maps at least once a week, check out U.S. mainland, Europe, and Asia, click into good prices and look for UA and their partners. Check especially for good prices into other airlines' hubs - MSP, DTW, ATL, DFW, etc. When airlines get ticked at each other, they tend to put the other guy's hub on sale. Also check here for any mention of a good rate to HNL - the other way will almost always be a good rate also.

The good news is that when you book an award ticket, you can get a much better value than mainland folks, because HNL is considered the same as NYC when booking a ticket to Europe or South America.

Edited to add: you might want to consider Sydney (via SFO) - $883+ on Travelocity. Looks like there are a lot of miles available to Australia right now, which I am not up on (not a UA guy). See the current thread on UA to SYD in this forum.

  • UA into DFW is reported in the WAS-HNL AA forum. Havent checked it but it makes sense.
