SMB network issues -- not on Vista

Posted by cfz on January 6th, 2009
  • Hello,

I'm a newbie. I recently ran the softmod on my xbox, with PC running Windows XP Home. They're connected through a Linksys Wireless G game adaptor.

Got XBMC Bling (November 2006) up and running fine. However, the Xbox and PC don't seem to be talking to each other. Using SMB share or the SMB Workgroup buttons results in "cannot connect to server" messages.

I executed the drop down 'share this file' checks from the Properties windows on the folders I want to share. No luck.

I tried re-setting the router, tried reconfiguring the workgroup, turned off the windows firewall -- no luck.

I know they're connected because I can ping, and I ran the FTP through Flash to get the softmod hooked up in the first place. Xbox live is working fine so I know the wireless is okay.

None of the setup guides seemed to help.

Searched the FAQs and the other boards, and seems like this is an issue for Vista people, but I'm not using Vista.

There must be something obvious and fundamental that I'm missing, because it sounds like SMB should be pretty automatic and easy.

The only other piece of info -- I have the PC configured so that there are two profiles (one for me, one for the lady). But I can't see why that would generate the cannot find server message.

Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to send to my personal email as well. Thanks.

  • this may seem like a dumb question, but have you actually edited the bookmarks you are attempting to use in XBMC? The default bookmarks are simply there as examples, they will not work.

  • I set up a separate account named xbox, with password xbox, gave it admin rights, and named the workgroup 'HOME'. Then entered this into the xbox. Still no luck. When I hit 'workgroup SMB share' on the XMBC dash it takes several moments then displays a screen with 'zero objects' and a back arrow.

Is there something in the SMB config settings on the dashboard that I need to alter?

  • I am no where near proficient at XBMC, but what I did at home was create a user account on my pc purely for xbmc and gave it full admin rights.

When sharing the folders, I specifically gave that user full rights in the properties.

Then in the configuration of XBMC, I told it to use that logon/password when trying to access shares.

  • Thanks -- it wasn't the bookmarks but in fiddling with it I figured it out. Had the McAfee firewall on. Didn't even think about that after I turned off the Windows firewall.

Duh. Oh well, maybe this will help somebody else.

One random glitch I still can't figure out: both SMB and XBMSP work now, but for some reason I have two xvid avi video files that only play with xbmsp, not with SMB sharing. No big deal -- I just want to watch the videos -- but I thought that was odd. Forum search on the subject didn't seem to turn up anything.
