Restricted Business Class Fare to Asia

Posted by mike on January 6th, 2009
  • There are a number of routes from the US to TPE where AC offers a discounted business class fare using the fare code J234. The rules states unlimited stopovers, however if a stoppover is made at YVR the fare increases signifantly. The correct J234 fare will price if the YVR stops are removed.

Will I have problems in making a reservation and ticketing without the stopovers, then calling AC Res to change the date changes? Will the date changes cause the ticket to be repriced? No change to the routing - just the dates.

  • How much is the discounted price? and how does AC not go through Canada/Vancouver in order to go to Taipei?

  • Is it the "HIP" rule you are referring to?

    Biggles.

  • Price varies slightly depending on the booking engine used but approximately:

LAX-YVR-ICN-TPE-HKG-YVR-LAX No Stops in YVR CA3750.00

    LAX-YVR-ICN-TPE-HKG-YVR-LAX w/Stops in YVR CA5864.00

As the fare is based on mileage, the stops in ICN and HKG don't seem to have any effect on the fare. But the stops in YVR make a dramatic increase as demonstrated.

  • It doesn't matter as it's AC flight numbers (AC operated) between YVR and LAX & YVR and ICN.

I would try and change it before departure just to ensure nothing will change. Worse comes to worse, you can just refund the ticket if the price jacks up. I don't see any problems.

  • The reservation system will detect that and the agent is supposed to explain to you why it happened as soon as the stopover was added in. Of course, there are some agents that will tell you they don't know why. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

  • You triggered the 'Higher Intermediate Point'. Changing it after departure shouldn't cause a price change. Most agent will just verify it's unlimited stopovers and then make the change for you. (Unless you're on a codeshare flight that is dependent on a connection; I don't see one here so you should be fine)

  • Also how does a consumer know about HIP as this information doesn't appear in any rules that I can see.

  • Thank you for the prompt replies.

Changing after departure would be difficult if the LAX-YVR leg is a connecting flight. Does it make a difference if it is before or after the first departure?

BTW, AC also has an Unrestricted Business Class fare (Fare basis: J) from LAX-MNL for about CAD 3500 RT.

    Possible routing: LAX-YVR(no stops)-NRT-HKG(no stops)-MNL-HKG(no stops)-NRT-YVR(no stops)-LAX.

As this is an unrestricted fare, the NRT-HKG-MNL vv. sectors can be on CX or any other carrier you desire.

Also with a wonderful thing called "differential fare construction", you can pay the "difference" (not that much) between F and J on the NRT-HKG(stop less than 24 hours)-MNL vv. and fly CX F.
